IEC approves use of kunyas in election ballots

By JT - Jul 16,2017 - Last updated at Jul 16,2017

AMMAN — The Independent Election Commission’s (IEC) Board of Commissioners on Sunday approved the use of candidates’ kunyas in the election ballots, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The use of kunyas, such as Abu (father of) or Um (mother of), is approved provided that only one kunya is used per candidate.

Moreover, the decision does not permit the use of titles, professions or names that are not included on the ID card issued by the Civil Status and Passports Department.

Also, changing the candidate’s last name is not allowed and should remain as found in the candidacy application and all attached documents. Candidates who wish to adopt a kunya are asked to visit the headquarters of the election committees before the 31th of this month.
